Lessons Learned

What a quick summer semester this has been! I want to reflect upon lessons that I have learned and hopefully be able to share what I've learned with you.     The single best piece of advice I want to give you is learn to deconstruct your fears. I realized most fears we put in front of ourselves that hold us back from achieving greatness is all in our head and most likely will never happen. It's compared to the boogie man when you were a kid, it kept you from going to bed because you had this made up fear in your head. I had a fear of failure and being poor again, so poor that my family would suffer greatly. However as I learned the chances of that happening are very close to zero. If I work hard, charge for my services and not do it for free then I'll be blessed with the income that I need to support my families needs. This fear came from me working on commission and not having great success but I deconstructed this fear and realized that my fear does not ...

Avoid the Wrong Job

Welcome back! I want to talk to you about a video I watched today, which was about how to avoid the wrong job. I have personally known many people who go into jobs and absolutely hate it! In fact I've been one of those people.     In this video which features Stan Christensen he tells us he seen and interviewed many resumes and people and the one thing he's interested in is the persons story. Why did they make the choices they've made? What made them want to go into what they have? Was it because they needed a job, was it because a parent pushed them towards that career choice? I know a family of teachers, I also know a family of lawyers. I have often wondered what pushed them to those career choices.      So, how do we avoid the wrong job? Pick something you think will be fun! What? Is it really that simple? The point is to do something you enjoy doing everyday. The reason for this is will be because if you are doing something you enjoy doing your doing t...
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!!! (What you can do with it and how to get it)     This week I want to talk to you about..... MONEY!!!! Have you every heard of the phrase "Money isn't everything". People who use that saying are in my mind incorrect. To me that's something a person who doesn't have money or has been taught incorrect principles about money would say. I have often said "They say money isn't everything, but you need money for everything." The reason I have said this is because you need money to pay tithing, you need money to help those in need, you need money for food, to pay your mortgage, pay your insurance, put gas in your car, keep the lights on, the list goes on and on.     This week we read an article called "Attitude on Money" by Stephen W. Gibson, in this article he talks about two types of people, those who know what money is for and those who want absolutely nothing to do with it. He also compares it to looking through lenses if ...
Chase Your Dreams     This week we learned about chasing your dreams and dreaming big. That caused me to pause and think to myself and ask the following questions. Who or what caused me to stop chasing my dreams? and Do I dream big enough?     I remember as a kid I had big dreams and I wanted to chase them and then one day or more like over time things changed. I didn't believe in myself and I didn't dream big anymore and I was no longer chasing my dreams. Dreams don't chase us, we chase our dreams! I realized this week what it takes to make our dreams come to fruition. I'm going to let you in on what it takes to make your dreams come true. Our dreams don't just land in our lap one day or it isn't like Santa and Christmas where you wake up and your dreams are wrapped up in some pretty wrapping paper with a nice beautiful red bow around it. This is how our dreams happen..... are you ready!? It's hard work, long days and late nights, and hard work! Did I me...
MOVING FORWARD     This week I was able to finish the book Mastery by George Leonard, in this book I was constantly reminded of the movie The Karate Kid. My mind was constantly drawn to the part where the main character Daniel LaRusso is being mentored by Mr. Miyagi, and he has to paint the fence and wax the car. Daniel is wondering why he has to do all this repetitive work, because he just wants to know when he's going to learn how to defend himself from the schools bullies. He want's to learn Karate! Well to learn the art of Karate it takes hours, months and years of practice.     In the world we live in we want it now, whatever it is, we don't care or even comprehend how many hours somebody puts into become great at their sport, we want it now. Like right now! Daniel LaRusso wanted it now, but through patience and learning the basics he was able to become great at Karate and beat the school bully at a Karate tournament.     In this book Mastery...
A Hero's Journey This week I asked a few friends and family the following question. "What do I do better than anyone else in the world?" I received back some shallow answers that had no substance to them and were for lack or better words worthless. The one answer I received back was from my best friend and a successful entrepreneur. He stated he didn't like how the question was worded. He rephrased the question to be "What are you good at in the world?" I'll admit as he did there are people who are better than anyone else in the world, like athletes, business leaders and investors. That leads me to this question, is Warren Buffett the best investor in the world? Not by a long shot, but he's the most well known great investor. The reason is because he is a contrarian in relation to the masses on Wall Street. Another thing I learned about this week was what I believe will be the single greatest lesson during my summer semester at BYU-I. The lesson wa...
