A Hero's Journey
This week I asked a few friends and family the following question. "What do I do better than anyone else in the world?" I received back some shallow answers that had no substance to them and were for lack or better words worthless. The one answer I received back was from my best friend and a successful entrepreneur. He stated he didn't like how the question was worded. He rephrased the question to be "What are you good at in the world?" I'll admit as he did there are people who are better than anyone else in the world, like athletes, business leaders and investors. That leads me to this question, is Warren Buffett the best investor in the world? Not by a long shot, but he's the most well known great investor. The reason is because he is a contrarian in relation to the masses on Wall Street.
Another thing I learned about this week was what I believe will be the single greatest lesson during my summer semester at BYU-I. The lesson was about deconstructing our fears. One of my biggest fears was that I would be driven to poverty again. Years ago I worked purely off commission, I did it for a whole year and we were about as beat down broke as you can get without being homeless. This put a lot of fear into me. However, through this assignment I realized if I go into business for myself I'll be charging for my services, there won't be any commission. As long as I've got customers I'll be able to sell and make an income.
Are your fears holding you back in such away that your constrained by your worries of what can go wrong? During this assignment I was able to deconstruct my biggest fears that has kept me from becoming an entrepreneur. I learned most of our fears aren't real, and aren't a fear if we have a worst case scenario backup plan. T. Boone Pickens a famous oil businessman filed for bankruptcy but he got up and went back to work and became a billionaire all over again. It's the perseverance that will take you to the next level.
DON'T LET YOUR FEARS HOLD YOU BACK FROM BECOMING GREAT IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD!!! THEY AREN'T REAL ANYWAYS.
Another thing we need to have as we embark upon our calling and entrepreneur journey is courage. Have you ever had the question asked "Do you have the courage?" What is courage? Courage according to Meriam-Webster dictionary is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty. John Wayne said "Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway." Everything we do that's out of our comfort zone takes courage. The first time we took a step as a toddler learning to walk took courage and we fell right on our butt and got up and did it again, because we had courage. So what's so different now? Are we afraid we'll get laughed at? Guess what, I've got a new flash! Those people laughing at you, don't have the courage that it takes to do what we're going to do. Think about this, how many times do you think Walt Disney, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Dwight Yoakam, Alan Jackson and many other greats were laughed at? More than we can possibly imagine. And each one of them has become legends in their own right.
Elder Bednar said something along the lines of faith is taking one step into the fog not knowing what is ahead but doing it anyways.
I personally believe we need to have faith to have courage, I think the two co-exist.
So my friends do these things HAVE FAITH, HAVE COURAGE, DON'T FEED INTO YOUR FEARS BECAUSE THEY MOST LIKELY WON'T HAPPEN AND BE GOOD AT WHATEVER YOU DO IN THIS WORLD!
